Menace claims to depict what life on the streets of Watts, California was truly like in the early 1990’s. Menace takes the groundwork laid by Boyz and pushes it to a dark nihilistic fatalism. Recently this film was released in the Criterion Collection, and shows two sides of the coin with films about growing up in South Central LA, it is nothing like "Friday," or "Boyz-N-Tha-Hood," where those characters had promise. If Boyz n the Hood was the ying, Menace would be the yang, its dark reflection. Overall this is a very amazing film, and a shame that the Hughes Brothers wouldn't end up doing anything too notable after this.
One of my favorite scenes was a rags to riches type montage set to N.W.A.'s "Dopeman," remixed by Ice Cube, which is actually very haunting as the song itself is a warning about selling drugs. The audio is mixed well to give more weight to the reality of the dialogue rather than the music that paints each scene. One thing I liked about the film was although it has a gangster rap and funky soul soundtrack this isn't the focus of the film. This film is the directorial debut of the Hughes Brothers, Allen and Albert, chronicling their own growing up experience here. The movie could only be Menace II Society, the bravura, uncompromising look at Caines spiral from missed opportunities to inescapable missteps into the inner-city cycle of hate and death. It focuses on the life of Caine played by Tyrin Turner narrating this summer of life when everything changed. The film doesn't glorify gang violence or life in the hood, showing that at times the people in the hood aren't just a victim of circumstances. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he. Movies like "Menace II Society" are the kind that make you reflect on your own way of life serving as a lesson to society as a whole.
